the jezabels

October 16th, 2011

Went and saw the jezabels last night in Coolangatta I decided against shooting it and just took the little x100 instead. For the camera nerds have a look at this. Shot on ISO 1250 – 1/60th @ f2.8 – 100% crop. Keep in mind that about 10+ meters away….

Love it…

October 14th, 2011

“Some Atlanta-based photographer posted a humorous Craigslist ad on Monday highlighting the fact that people often assume that photographers will be happy to do work for free.

I am a photographer and since people are always looking for free shoots I assume that they must also do their job, or provide their services, for free.

I am looking to hire all types of people to do all sorts of jobs for me, as long as I do not have to pay anything. Just think, you will gain more experience, and I will put the word out for you and let everyone know what wonderful work you do. This opportunity will bring you a ton of unpaid work, but everyone will love you. So if you have a job or service you provide, and will do it for free, please let me know, because I am sure I have work for you and will hire you in a second.

Feel free to email me with the service you can provide, when you can start, and please include references.

I look forward to you free service.
Thanks,:)”

Its online – Finally!

June 24th, 2011

Well after about 6 years I have finally got around to getting my first online store happening.

I have decided to keep it pretty simple for the time and just have 20 of my favorites up there for sale but I will be adding more over time and new ones as they come. In saying this please feel free to email me if you wish to have a different photo or different size printed.

For anyone who hasn’t used a shop like this before it’s pretty easy. Simply choose what size print you want and whether you want it on metallic or gloss then your next step is choose a frame (if you want). Once you have done that all you have to do is press “Add to cart”. Done.

If you are simply after a canvas by itself all you have to do is go the “Framing or Canvas” menu and go all the way down the bottom and click on the “Canvas – 24×16″ then click add to cart. Easy!

I hope you find something you like and if you have any dramas or suggestions please let me know!.

Pumping Waves

January 19th, 2011

Well the last week has been pretty crazy. At one end there was the some of the worst flooding Queensland has ever seen (below) and at the other we have one of the best swells Queensland has seen in years. I was lucky enough to witness and photographer both of them.

Sunday morning saw some of the best waves Kirra has had in the last few years, i’d say some of the best since about 2004. I was lucky enough to get hooked up with a jetski to shoot off which made things alot easier. It seems the shots from this little session have been a little bit of hit, the online gallery on the Surfing Life website has had over 3000 hits which is pretty cool.

One last thing, if you have facebook make sure you add me new page. I have been putting new stuff up every day.

Brisbane Floods

January 13th, 2011

One thing I really hate about natural disasters and myself is the fact that I always seem to be watching all this bad stuff happening on TV and never actually getting out there and documenting it, most the time because it’s on the other side of the country and it’s almost impossible to get into but it always gets to me. So when all of this Brisbane issue started to happen I knew it was time to try and do my bit and try and document the events as it all happened.

So yesterday Michael McQueen and myself got right into the heart of things in Brisbane and did out little bit to help out. We started off sandbagging in the city in between getting some shots then we headed out to Milton, one of the lowest parts of the city, to help the evacuation of peoples homes, many of which belonged to older people who had already left without being able to make and preparations themselves.

I don’t really know what else to say about all of this, it’s weird seeing people going through such a hard time and only being able to do so much. I guess the only thing I can say is that it’s going to take a lot of people a lot of time to get back to normal and I really think people need to get off their arse’s and do something about it instead of wondering what they can do to help. I hope these shots can make at least one person help out.

IF you can’t physically help out try and do your best with a donation to the Flood Appeal. Anyway my Army unit has gone on call so hopefully we can get up there again and help out as much as possible.

Damien Thomlinson

November 21st, 2010

Last week I met without a doubt the most determine and down to earth person I have ever met. His name is Damien Thomlinson, if you watch 60 minutes ever you might know who he is. If you don’t, he is a commando in the Australian Army in the 2nd Commando Regiment, if you don’t know much about the army these guys are the best of the best, they do some really crazy shit. It also turns out he grew up bodyboarding and is still a keen surfer just waiting to get back out there. Anyway while over in Afghanistan last year Damien was critically injured when he was blown up by a Taliban IED. As a result Damien lost both of his legs aswell as receiving major injuries to other parts of his body, he came pretty much as close as you can come to dieing and some how survived it, not only did he survive it he was back up and walking on prosthetic legs within 8 weeks!, the guys a freak, I mean I saw him dive into a pool and swim around like it was nothing. If you were ever to meet him there is pretty much no way you could tell he is missing his legs, he is the funniest and most positive guy ever and defiantly hasn’t made his injury a negative thing, i really don’t know how he has done it.

Anyway with the help of some very nice people (Kay Danes) I got the opportunity to go down to Sydney and shoot some portraits with Damien for the National Portrait Prize. I have never entered any form of competition and really wanted to try and give this one a dig and shoot something with alot of meaning behind it, I really want to do my best to raise awareness of these guys you hear about getting injured on the TV. I don’t want to win it but I would love to get within the top 24 and get my photo displayed in the Gallery. The three photos below are the photo’s I entered. There’s alot of reasoning behind why I shot and choose these specific photos but i’m really happy with how it turned out. November 30th is D-Day for me to find out if i made it into the top 24, fingers crossed. Would love to hear what you guys think!

Check out the 60 minutes story aswell people. It’s amazing.
